From Fear to Freedom: Lucifer’s 15K Milestone

While I want to use this blog to offer tips, tricks, and information about life with a reactive dog, I think one other element is SO important – real-life stories.

Each of us who has found our way to this space has done so because of a reactive dog who has captured our hearts.

I would love to tell you that there is a quick fix, but the truth is that reactivity is a long game.

During this journey, you will face struggles and setbacks. But you will also feel moments of joy and accomplishment.

Celebrating those accomplishments, however big or small, is key to helping you keep moving forward during the tough times.

With that in mind, I’m going to take this moment to share one of Lucifer’s….

Let’s Start at the Beginning…

If you’re new to our website or haven’t heard Lucifer’s story before, I warn you that he had a less-than-desirable start.

Before being rescued and making his big trip to Canada for his forever home, he endured significant physical trauma at just 4 months old. This included severe fractures in both of his front legs.

Despite these injuries, Lucifer’s spirit remained unbroken. His resilience and determination to overcome adversity were clear in his playful nature.

He had an unwavering eagerness to explore the world. However, his physical limitations required careful management and consideration.

For several weeks, he was on strict crate rest as we attended appointments with an orthopedic specialist and did our best to help him maintain mobility.

While his past injuries may have presented challenges, Lucifer’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance. Not only did he not let his injuries keep him from being a “normal puppy,” he grew into the perfect little adventure pup.

A Thanksgiving Trip to Silent Lake Provincial Park

In our family, we have a love for all things outdoor adventure. This includes regular trips camping, hiking, and canoeing.

We even moved into a literal cabin in the woods full-time and started a blog about pet-friendly outdoor travel called The Kas Pack.

One tradition we have all come to love is planning a visit to a new (to us) provincial park to celebrate the Thanksgiving weekend.

In October 2023, that tradition took us to Silent Lake Provincial Park. This beautiful slice of paradise near Bancroft, Ontario, is well-known for over 19 km of hiking trails, 17 km of mountain biking trails, and its namesake, Silent Lake.

One trail that had long been on my bucket list was Lakeshore Hiking Trail, a 15 km round trip estimated to take approximately 6 hours.

I had previously hiked many smaller trails with my little adventure buddy, but this one would test his endurance and how far he has overcome the physical challenges he once faced.

Hitting the Trail

On the morning of October 8, 2023, we woke up early with a cup of coffee (for me) and a bowl of Carna4 for Lucifer while sitting around a warm campfire.

The temperatures were cool, with highs dropping to 8 degrees Celsius, and we were experiencing a misty rain. But we weren’t about to let a little rain keep us from hitting the trails.

Little man Lucifer was beyond excited.

Hiking that day, we quickly felt the impact of the rain – both the coolness of the rain gathering on our skin/coat and how the wet made the trial a little more slippery to navigate.

Luckily, this also meant that most other hikers were avoiding the trails and staying in the warmth of their campfires.

By hour 3, I was starting to feel the dampness and the cool temperatures coming through, but it wasn’t slowing Lucifer down. With a big puppy smile, he was clearly in his element!

The sweetest moments came when we would reach a lookout spot. Take a seat to enjoy the view; he would snuggle in close, allowing us to share this special moment together.

Throughout the full 15 km trail, we only encountered a couple of other couples.

Even these encounters, usually a struggle for a fear-reactive pup like him, were handled surprisingly well. He would give a small growl or bark but then turn to me for direction on what I wanted him to do with the situation.

The rain picked up in the final 2 hours of our hike. When we finally emerged at the trailhead, we were soaked through but so happy.

I still vividly remember the moment we finished. The trail comes out near the park’s rustic cabins, and a woman was walking over to her vehicle. She asked if we had completed the trail and congratulated us.

She didn’t know the impact that congratulations had, but it has stuck with me.

Not only because we had completed the trail but because of what it represented for him. This once-broken little puppy had overcome his challenges and was truly living his best life at that moment.

What Does the Future Hold?

This story dates back to 2023. So, that may leave you wondering what this means for Lucifer moving forward.

Since that hike, he has gone on many hikes with me, along with at least one camping trip every month around the province.

We’re now planning a 2025 hammock camping trip, just him and I hiking into the backcountry and making those special memories together in the wilderness.

After seeing how far he has come and the struggles he has faced, we hope that creating this site and sharing his story will help others struggling with the challenges of reactivity.

If even one reactive dog parent feels inspired by this, it’s worth it!
